Maintaining the historical integrity of Gustavus & surrounding areas by collecting and preserving important early documents, photos and artifacts

Join Us in Gustavus for a 3-Day Centennial Celebration Event
Friday, Saturday & Sunday, June 27th - 29th, 2014

Parker Home Gustavus AK In celebration of 100 years since the first settlers arrived on the shores of Salmon River at Strawberry Point, (now Gustavus), Gustavus Historical Archives & Antiquities (GHAA) will sponsor "the biggest party Gustavus has ever seen", beginning Friday, June 27th and continuing through Saturday and Sunday. Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime event. This is your personal invitation!

Join with others Friday evening in the tolling of the bell 100 times with the pulling of the tower rope-each ring representing one year since 1914 when Gustavus was first settled. Sign in for this historic event as we celebrate the grand opening of the new Monument Building located at the
cemetery, with refreshments and open house tours. Dignitaries from the military will be in attendance to unveil the new bronze memorial for the 1957 National Guard plane crash-dedicated to the men who died and the locals who rescued and saved the survivors.
Saturday's schedule includes live music, food, & non-stop old-fashioned fun & games. You'll see a re-enactment of the settlers Salmon River landing with a live cannon firing to signal the start of an all day, action-filled schedule of activities for young and old alike. Besides lawn music from local musicians, there will be concerts with favorite oldies (maybe some Elvis?) from a surprise out-of-town old timer who is very familiar with these parts. There will be no end to the "good ole days" festivities-including gold panning, lumberjack log rolling, hay wagon & pony rides, a beard growing contest, outhouse TP throws, etc. And did we mention…lots and lots of food?

Collectors anyone? Bring postcard, mail or momento to receive a one-day-only pictorial postmark stamp designed specifically to commemorate Strawberry Point's 100 Year Centennial Celebration from our very own, on site United States Postmaster.
Gustavus Tug-O-War
Start the ball rolling Sunday morning with a sourdough pancake feed at the centrally located historic Gustavus Inn. The Gustavus Inn is one of Southeast Alaska's oldest (if not the oldest!) homesteads still in operation today-homesteaded in the late 1920's and serving as an inn since the 1940's. In the afternoon you'll have an opportunity to get a close up and personal VIP tour of some of Strawberry Points original homesteads (actually inside a few!) along with some eye-opening historic stories from the rich archives of the GHAA files.
Gustavus Sunday eve caps off the 3-day celebration with an entertaining and historic stage production for the entire community at the school gym. Come as you are-reminisce, be ready to laugh or cry.

Getting to Gustavus is easy. Besides local air charters (Wings, Alaska Seaplanes and Fjord Air), Alaska Airlines provides daily jet service. AMHS will be providing a Centennial Celebration ferry schedule just for this special event weekend. The ferry departs Juneau 7 A.M. Saturday June 28th and returns Sunday, leaving Gustavus at 12:15 P.M. arriving Juneau 4:30 P.M. Roundtrip fare is $66/each. If transportation is
needed contact for reservations. Car rentals available. Gustavus also has bike friendly roads.

Gustavus offers a variety of world class inns, bed & breakfasts, and Glacier Bay Park lodging accommodations. Contact the Gustavus Visitors Association at for further assistance with over-night options.
