1933 Homesteader Henry "Hank" Johnson's Last Gustavus, Alaska Photo.
  • Date: 1979
  • Description: Photo by wife Marge Johnson for a very specific purpose. 46 years earlier, Hank was standing this exact spot proudly displaying a bounty eagle. Original cabin wall just out of range in 1933 photo. Timber removed in background. Hank had been ill & left Gustavus final time just months after.

  • Description: Marge Johnson, middle, (married to early homesteader "Hank" Johnson) with two pinochle friends. Jesse Buoy (Lt.) arrived with family 1955 & took up Sam Buoy's old homestead. Ann Youmans (Rt.) along with husband Ken came in association with a job at Glacier Bay National Park.

  • Description: Photo taken by Henry "Hank" Johnson gathering firewood supply for Rink Creek homestead with production machine. 2" by 8" handled frame could be picked up & moved like wheelbarrow. As seen near ground, 8" wide saw blade has almost cut through 2' diameter log. Click for more.

"Hank" Johnson's 1972 Renovation Of 1933 Rink Creek Cabin.
  • Date: 1972
  • Description: Henry "Hank" Johnson and brother Carl built original 12' by 16' cabin c. 1933. In 1972 Hank, together with new wife Marge & her son, Don Bryant, renovated the original upon return to Gustavus & resided there until 1978. Hank took ill & died the next year. Barrel is SE corner. Strawberry Point Pioneer Ernie Swanson & Wife Ruth. Elfin Cove, Alaska.

  • Description: Ernie Swanson came to "The Flats" about 1915. He helped Taggarts, Davis', and Henrys' plant & harvest rutabagas and built "Swanson's Place" east side of Salmon River. He decided farming was not for him, moved & founded Elfin Cove. White's renamed his cabin the "Bear's Nest" in 1925.

  • Description: At work in Gustavus, Alaska, Glen Parker on Parker Fordson tractor at May & Bill White's homestead between back of house and garage. Model A car bought for Edith A. Parker (who never learned to drive) seen stored in out building. Wheels from this car still exists in Gustavus today.

10  Missionary Mrs. Wade With Nell Crowell Visiting Southeast Alaska.
  • Date: 1937
  • Description: Mrs. Wade organized and recruited helpers to visit and hold meetings in Southeast Alaska. Nell Crowell (who married Glen Parker in first Gustavus wedding 1938) answered the call at age 23 and traveled from California with Mrs. Wade to Excursion Inlet and then to Gustavus, Alaska.

14  Captain Bob Kafader With Navigator Standing By His U. S. Airforce Plane.
  • Date: 1955 (Estimate)
  • Description: Capt. Bob Emory Kafader (Lt.) joined Airforce in 1940 & was stationed in Japan before Nov. 23, 1957 crash which took his life deep in the woods of Gustavus, Alaska. Navigator (Rt.) unidentified. Navigator and plane were NOT involved in the accident that tragically claimed the Captain.

15  Captain Bob Emory Kafader; Died In 1957 Gustavus, Alaska Plane Crash.
  • Date: 1952
  • Description: Portrait photo in uniform of Capt. Kafader taken 5 years before piloting the National Guard twin engine Douglas C-47 "Gooney Bird" aircraft which crashed in a snowstorm. 4 crew members died. 7 passengers survived. Bulk of badly damaged aircraft remains today. Click for more.

16  Joseph P. Ibach Prospecting Near Reid Inlet, Glacier Bay, Alaska.
  • Date: 1950 - 1959
  • Description: Prospector Joe Ibach seen on mountain near Reid Inlet in search of gold. Joe had numerous claims and several working mines in Glacier Bay and was reported to never take a step without scouting the rocks and terrain for any signs of precious minerals. Joe & Muz lived on Lemesurier Is.
