Fred Matson's Boat Comes Literally Out of the Woodwork!

Harry Hall's generous offer for Fred to actually build his boat in Harry's Gustavus house worked well...until the boat hull was completed! But forced remodeling of an outside wall wasn't a bad thing. Click for more.

The "Iola" was to be Fred and Ruth's first "gas boat" soon after landing in Gustavus.

The only trouble was, Fred and Ruth had no place to build it and Fred was anxious to get started.  Fortunate for them they had made great friends with Harry Hall. So when Harry offered to "loan" his living room out as a garage, no one seemed surprised or concerned about the eventual outcome.

The boat was made as big as the room allowed (28 foot hull, in a room exactly that length) with very little room to work or move (duck) around it.

The problem came, of course, when it was time to "out" the boat. No problem really, as Harry had all along decided he was due for a remodel, and the wall could be cut out to make room for a large window. The hardest part of it all turned out to be sawing through the logs for the opening.

When all was said and done...all was said and done. Only in Gustavus!
