Three Early Farmers Working Fields by Hand. Strawberry Point, Alaska.

Earliest photo of the hopeful homesteaders in the fields "proving up" to patent their lands. Open fields along side and near Salmon River looking east to mountain range. Note fence. Click title for identifications....

GHAA has received conflicting information regarding the identities of these three "farmers". GHAA will be able to positively identify these men as documented archives are accessed and evaluated.

Orville K. Rude (who made an early, short attempt at homesteading in the Rink Creek area) is believed to be on the left. John "Jack" Davis is in the center. E. O. "Ernie" Swanson is on the far right for sure.

The identifications in this photo were taken from an article written by Ernie Swanson in the October, 1964 issue of the Alaska Sportsman.
