An Ice Cream Break? Try Turnips! Harvest Time in Gustavus, Alaska.

Gustavus folks taking a break during harvest season. A turnip for everyone! From Lt. to Rt. Alice (5) & Bill (3) White, Glen Parker, Henrietta, Gloria, & Genevieve White, Child's back, Nell Crowell, Dorothy White on truck. Boardwalk & mud tracks. Click for more on the hay...

This long, low lying structure was called the "hay drying barn". Due to frequent inclement weather following late summer hay mowing, a wood heater with "blower" was installed at the left end of the building (left in photo), hay spread out on racks, and the air left to blow and circulate.

This method of indoor hay drying salvaged the hay season on more than one occasion for the Bill and May White homestead and assured that the cattle had adequate feed should the winter prove long and harsh.
