Does GHAA have any examples of the many programs put on by the Gustavus School in the early days?

Q -  Does GHAA have any examples of the many programs put on by the Gustavus School in the early days?

A -  In the days of the early settlers, events of the community and the schools were so intertwined as to be inseparable one from the other. A school program, for example, WAS a community-wide event, with the students, parents, and neighbors without school children being equally involved. It was certainly the case in Gustavus with many programs requiring participation of everyone who lived here and soliciting the help of anyone with extra fabrics and “this and that’s” for costume and scene making.  Every holiday or season, (or any reason at all) was cause enough to raise the excitement level and anticipation of all the homesteaders.  At times, to maintain an “audience” the participants would go from stage to seats to stage so that there were always spectators to watch the performers.

GHAA has an original, rather formal typed program from Christmas 1938 that was primarily a presentation of songs and recitations which we will recreate here exactly as written for Gustavus 2006 to enjoy. If you can only imagine how clean and “slicked up” this tiny group of revelers would have been—dressed in their very best handsome outfits and feeling as proud and important as though the adoring crowds numbered in the hundreds!  Merry Christmas from GHAA and a very happy and prosperous New Year!
